Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar (also spelt
Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, and known as R.G.Bhandarkar),
was a scholar, Orientals and social reformer. He was born on 6th
July 1837 in Malvan, Sindhudurg district of present Maharashtra.
He born in a house of a small ward known as Medha, He
completed his primary education in a private school of Malvan. His
father was working as a clerk in Tahasildar office, Malvan. He
transferred to Ratnagiri in 1850 so Dr Bhandarkar continued his
high-school education in a government school of Ratnagiri. For
higher education, he secured his admission in Elphinstone College,
Mumbai. While still a student, he became, a member of the Paramhansa Sabha, a secret association for the furtherance of
liberal idea in 1853. It was secret in order to avoid the wrath of the
powerful and orthodox elements of society.
He belonged to the first batch of
graduates from Bombay University in 1862 and completed his
master’s degree in 1863. In the course of his brilliant academic
career, he won many awards and scholarships.
He served both Elphinston college and Deccan
College during his distinguished teaching career. He was
particularly proficient in English literature, History & Sanskrit.
After working for short duration as the headmaster of Government school
in Hyderabad (Sind) & Ratnagiri, He joined as an assistant
professor in Elphinston College & later as a first Indian
professor for Sanskrit in Deccan College, Pune.
He participated in International
conferences on Oriental Studies held in London (1874)
and Vienna (1886) and made invaluable contributions. In
1885, He was conferred by Ph. D. through Gotingen University in
Germany.
International institutes like Royal Asiatic Society (London),
German Oriental Society, American Oriental society, Imperial
Academy of St. Petersburg, Italian Asiatic Society etc honored
him with their memberships. He became Vice Chancellor
of Bombay University before he retired in 1894. In 1911,
he awarded by ' K C I E ' & 'Sir'.
He breathed his last on 24th August 1925.

Govind Sadashiv Ghurye born in Malvan, Dist- Sindhudurga.
He completed his education up to intermediate in Junagadh &
completed M. A. degree from Elphinston college, Bombay. He became
interested in social institutions from his study of 'Manusmriti' &
went to Cambridge to study anthropology & sociology. He completed
his Ph.D. degree in 1923 from Cambridge university.
On his
return from Cambridge, He continued his research in the National
Library in Calcutta for about a year. In 1924, he was appointed as
a
Reader & Head of the department of Sociology in Bombay university.
After a decade, became a Professor. Under his leadership, Mumbai
became leading center for research in sociology.
A first
Jagannath Shankar Sheth Scholarship in subject Sanskrit is awarded
to Mr Ghurye. He attempted fruitful synthesis of indological &
sociological perspectives.
When he
retired at the age of 65, he was named the first professor
emeritus of the University of Bombay. He died at the age of 90,
on
28th December, 1984.

Shreedhar Shantaram Ajgaonkar
was born in Malvan in
1906. His Academic career was as follows
School education :- A.S.D.
Topiwalla High School - Malvan.
College Education :- Willington
College, Sangali.
Medical Education :- B. J. Medical
College, Pune.
Started medical practice at Malvan in
1930.
He was
elected as a member of Malvan Municipality.
Initially, He was
associated as a managing committee member & later as a
chairman of Malvan Education Society running, Topiwalla High
School.
He went for further medical education especially in field of
Diabetes to Vienna in 1937 & got “Golden key” for the
proficiency. He continued his further education at Doublin &
returned to India. Because of his interest in Diabetes, he
developed Ayurvedic drug combination and presented his work in
Indian medical Association conferences.
In 1948, He shifted to Mumbai and started working with Dr. K. V.
Sathe’s unit in J. J. Hospital. He was responsible to start 1st
diabetic clinic in western India at J. J. Hospital to educate the
lay public as well as medical people. He started Diabetic
Association of India in 1955. He had conducted detection camps,
monthly lectures and printed educative material in those days.
His work was appreciated at International
Diabetes Federation (IDF) and he was taken up on the governing
Council of IDF in 1964. Later on he was elected as
Vice-President in 1976 and was nominated as Honorary President
in 1979. He was the first recipient of IDF Presidential award
for outstanding contribution to the field Diabetology in 1991.
His contributions were not limited to the
field of Diabetology but were in diverse fields, too. He was
connected to many social cultural & education organization in
Mumbai.

Bhargavrao Vitthal
Warerkar
alias Mama Warerkar was born in Chiplun. He had his primary as
well as middle school education in Malvan, He then shifted
to Ratnagiri for higher education.
Mama Warerkar, a versatile writer, scripted his first Marathi
play 'KunjaVihari' in 1904. which was produced on the stage
by 'Swadesh Hitchintak Mandal' on April 1908. This was followed by
other successful plays like 'Satyecha Gulam',
'Karin ti purva disha', 'Sonyacha Kalas', 'Hach Mulacha
Baap', 'Bhumikanya Sita', 'Apurva Bangal', 'Layacha laya', 'Sanyasacha
sansar' also earned wide popularity. He wrote under
different pre-names like 'Bhav', 'Bhavsharma', 'B-Ram' & 'Sutradhar'
.
Warekar had to his credit 37 play scripts, 3 story Books,
25 short detective stories, 27 novels, 6 art plays, 50
translated novels.
His autobiography 'Maza Natak Samar' was well-received by
public in his days. Warerkar was elected chairman of Marathi
Sahitya Sammelan as well as Marathi Natya Sammelan for more than
once. As a token of his appreciation Warerkar's contribution
to Marathi literature, in 1956, he was conferred by 'PadmaBhushan'.
He was also nominated to Rajyasabha.
Most of the leading female character in Varerkar's play
symbolize a struggle for women's liberation. His play 'Bhumikanya
Sita' comes in this category.
Warerkar died on september 23,1964, in Malvan, where he
spent formative years of his life hence a newly constructed
auditorium named after him.

Raghunath Govind Kamat (Bapusaheb
Kamat)
also known as 'Malvancha
Daansurya' born in Malvan on
1st September, 1899. He was the first businessmen in Malvan who
started cashew nuts processing & production factory. Hundred
of people were working in that factory. He was wise & helpful man.
He donate thousands of rupees in that time for construction of
temples in Malvan.
A
road from Bharad to Wairy is named for his remembrance. It
is known as 'Late Bapusaheb Kamat Road'.

Paruji Narayan Misal known
as Misal master was
born at kumbharmath in Malvan. After passing out Vernacular Final
in 1905, he joined as a teacher in Primary school at Dewoolwada.
Misal edited a
children's weekly by name 'Balsanmitra'. By his editorial skill,
he weekly became popular among school children. but some people in
general prevented the circulation. Misal tries his level best to
keep the weekly going by asking eminent writer's of children's
stories like Madhu Mangesh Karnik, A N Pednekar, Nerurkar & others
to contribute his paper but did not succeed. His weekly however
brought him the epithet 'Sane guruji of Malvan'. On May 27,1955
Misal died by heart attack in the office of Malvan Tahasildar
where he had gone to discuss the matter concerning his weekly. He
was 67 then his son Damodar was also present at the meeting.
After Misal's death, Damodar continued the weekly for short while.
Then after his death, the paper folded up. Misal wrote about 50
children's books which are still popular. The Municipal
corporation then named the road of Kumbharmath after Misal. The
Barr. Nath Pai Sevangan had also named their building of
children's unit (Balwadi) on his weekly.

Vasant Ladoba Mhapankar was born at Dewoolwada in Malvan. Two
of his neighbors viz. Vaman Joshi (Vedant
Bhattacharya), Sanskrit Scholar & Maheshwar shastri Puranik (Expert
in Ayurveda system of medicine) had major influence in his
character, since his childhood.
Mhapankar wanted to be astrologer, with this aim in view he began
reading of various books on the subject in Marathi, English &
Sanskrit. Lots of people from Maharashtra were coming to Mhapankar
for knowimg their fortune. He was always interested in
performing religious, enthrall as well as social function.
Mhapankar's astrology columns appears in various newspapers &
magazines and became the central feature of some occasional
magazines. News papers outside the Maharashtra published
translated version of his columns.
The Vidarbha central astrological association at the Amarawati
region held in 1939 conferred the title of 'Horaratna' for him in
appreciation of his service in the field. Mhapankar died by cancer
in March 17, 1970.

born in Malvan. He was
a famouse doctor for diabetic patients . He has fame all over the world. He
was also
known as 'Kokanche Bhadkamkar'. (Bhadkamkar was a famouse doctor
of Mumbai).
Dr Ajgaonkar wrote many books. His books on diabetes are very
famous in India.

S K Patil born in Parule on 14th August 1899. In 1918, he
passed out Matricular examination. For higher education, he took
admission in St. Zavior college of Mumbai. He worked with freedom
fighter Lokmanya Tilak.
He started first national school in Malvan. On his remembrance,
a degree college in Malvan is named as 'S K Patil
College of arts & Comm.'

Nireshwalya Rangappa Suvarna
an eminence surgeon & leading
homeopathic was born at Manglore on July 27,1901, in an
aristocratic family. He belongs to the first batch of students
from Mumbai's KEM hospital. Beside studies he excelled in sports &
debating activities during the student days. Though a versatile
sportsman, he specially patronized badminton & tennis. His mother
tongue was Kannada & having smattering of Marathi. He started his
medical practice in Mumbai but come down to Sawantwadi in 1942 as
a chief medical officer of the state.
Irked by palace infringes, he resigned the job & shifted to Malvan
to setup his private practice because of his sociable disposition.
he soon became popular figure in Malvan. In 1970, He & his
research on deadly disease of cancer & evolved effective
homeopathic treatment for it between 1982 & 1992. Regularly he
visit Pune once in a month to treat cancer patients from all over
the state. He left his soul on
22 November, 2001 in Malvan.

Dr Shridhar Sitaram Kudalkar
doNne a great job in his
social, cultural, Educational & medical fields. He completed
his MBBS degree on 28th December,1928. He worked in Malvan municipal
corporation on various committees & for 1945-46 he was a president
of Malvan municipal corporation.
In 1957, He started CPL & ST
courses in Malvan. In 1961 He founded Pragatik primary school &
also found 'Rotary Club' for handicapped.

Balkrishna Dattatray Parasnaik
also known as Daji Parasnaik was a distinguished director,
actor & Harmonium player from Malvan. Daji has much reviewed name
among the local theater commonly long after his death. He
established various amateur theater groups like Bhutnath Nutan
Natya Samaj, Bharat Natya Mandal (Wairy), Lavendra Sangeet Minar (Dhuriwada)
& Dattaguru Natya Mandal. He worked out as a drama teacher in
Malvan. Apart from director of the plays, he also looked after
their music side. He provided harmonium support to veteran singer
actress of those days, such as Jayaram & Jaymala Shiledar, Shripad Nevarekar,
Jyotsana Bhole etc.
He was also a creative
painter & stage decorator.

Jayant Shivram Salgaonkar is a journalist, an astrologer, an
administrator and an entrepreneur all rolled into one, born at Malvan, on February 1, 1929. Salgaonkar had his education in
Topiwala high school where he excelled in extracurricular
activities. but acquired proficiency in Sanskrit & Marathi
literature. He started his journalistic carrier by launching a
weekly named 'Jyoti' in Malvan at 1948. After schooling he joined
'Loksatta' a leading daily from Mumbai where he edited a weekly
crossword. There panel immense popular & gave considerable benefit
to the paper's circulation. He then launch a novel almanac by name
'Kal Nirnay' which besides giving details of days & dates of
important religious events, also carries information on astrology,
medicines & literature which instantly clicked with people. The
almanac is today printed in more than ten languages including
English. After that Salgaonkar did not look back.
Today he
has been financially help for many local religions for cultural
causes in Malvan & religious places in the district
Sibdhudurga. he had
brought up a Ganesh temple at Malvan which has become a major
tourist attraction for tourists.

Macchindra Kambali born in a
humble family in Revandi, Malvan. Kambali displayed talent for
histrionics at very low age by various artists as well as other
prominent people in his area, as he grew up & he formed his
own theater group by name Bhadrakali production. Under the banner
he produced play like 'Vastra Haran', 'Pandgo ilo re ilo', 'Ghas
re rama', 'Kele tuka zale maka'. All the plays are in Malvani.
These plays became immensely popular with the audience so much
that kambali even gave these performance in European countries. He
is also popular actor in Marathi films, including 'Sansar
Pakharancha' which was shot in Malvan.

Narayan Tatu Rane is a former Chief Ministrer of
Maharashtra. He was a member of Shiv Sena until July 2005
then he joined Indian Congress Party.
In July 2005 Narayan
Rane launched a revolt against Shiv Sena along with 9 other MLAs,
which eventually resulted in his expulsion from Shiv Sena. On 3
July,2005, he was expelled from the Shiv Sena . On 23 July,
2005, he resigned from the Maharashtra legislative assembly.
Narayan Rane has since
joined theCongress Party and won the re-election from the Malvan
Constituiemcy on a Congress ticket on the 23 November, 2005.
